EN ~ A few days ago Jose was wondering if parents somehow set their kids preferences about things; for instance, Does Samuel prefer cars to flowers because he is a boy or because he learned it from us? True or false, I think at this age, he knows what he likes almost certainly. I’ve showed him flowers 1001 times and they just didn’t appeal to him, no matter how beautiful they were, he found way more exciting a police car, an ambulance or a bus. And then, last Friday for the first time he showed some interest about flowers, not just any flower, tulips… lots of them!

ES ~ Hace poco José se estaba preguntando hasta qué punto los padres condicionamos las preferencias de nuestros hijos. Por ejemplo, ¿Samuel prefiere un carro a una flor porque es un chico, o porque lo aprendió de nosotros? Cierto o falso, pienso que él sabe con bastante certitud qué le gusta y qué no. Sin importar cuántas veces le he mostrado flores, simplemente las ignora; nada se compara a su reacción frente a una patrulla de policía, una ambulancia o un bus. Hasta que el viernes pasado por primera vez se mostró interesado por las flores, pero no cualquier flor, sino tulipanes… ¡Montones de tulipanes!

EN ~ As we were entering to the Botanical Garden, the ridiculously beautiful and massive amount of tulips were so stunning that he told me very softly in Spanish: Likes. I bet he had no idea about what those colorful things were, but he sure like them and I couldn’t agree more. They were absolutely gorgeous. On top of that, that sunny afternoon we made new friends. I hope we keep seen them as they seem to be really nice people.

ES ~ Mientras nos adentrábamos en el Jardín Botánico, el espectáculo multicolor que brindaba ese mar de tulipanes era tan impresionante que me dijo suavecito y muy complacido: Gusta. Apuesto a que no tenía ni idea de qué eran esas cosas tan coloridas, pero de que le gustaban, le gustaban y yo no pude estar más de acuerdo con él. Eran absolutamente hermosos. Como si esto fuera poco, esa tarde soleada hicimos nuevos amigos. Espero que sigamos viéndolos porque son muy simpáticos.

EN ~ Walking though this city in May feels like a giant Mother’s Day gift. There’s beauty everywhere… whether is a sunny or a rainy day. It is pretty special. So this is a tiny gift to Sam’s grannys, my sisters, sisters-in-law, nieces and friends who are moms: a few flowers to wish you all a very happy Mother’s Day!

ES ~ Caminar por esta ciudad en mayo se siente como un gigantesco regalo de día de las madres… sea soleado o lluvioso, es siempre especial. Así que este es un pequeño regalo para mi mami, mi suegrita, mis hermanas, cuñadas, sobrinas y amigas que son mamás: ¡algunas flores para desearles a todas un maravilloso día!

EN ~ There’s definitely something good about pancakes. Samuel loves to eat them and so do I. Since I discovered this recipe* we’re having an overdose every weekend. We even have pancakes during workdays because they can be frozen and reheated in the oven and in a few minutes they are as good as new!

ES ~ Hay cosas buenas en esta vida y hay panquecas. A Samuel le encantan tanto como a mí y desde que descubrí esta receta (la traducción al final de esta entrada), tenemos una sobredosis cada fin de semana. Las comemos incluso entre semana, porque se pueden congelar y recalentarse en el horno; unos cinco minutos a 300ºF y ¡quedan tan ricas y frescas como recién hechas!

EN ~ I like them with fruits, yogurt and lots of maple sirup. Samuel, on the other hand, prefers to grab them with his little fingers and eat them as they come from the pan; a warm and simple treat every time.

ES ~ Me gusta acompañarlas con frutas, yogur y mucho sirop de arce. Samuel, por otro lado, prefiere comérselas al natural, agarrándolas con sus manitas; nos damos un gustazo en cada ocasión.

EN ~ I’m loving the fact of being a mom and learning how to indulge my little boy thrills me. Sometimes cooking reminds me when my mom used to do it for me and that makes me smile like a school girl. I’m thinking I could once in a while share these recipes and as I’m learning how to make tabletop photographs with Jackie, I may as well do it with photos! Gosh, I’m excited!

ES ~ Estoy disfrutando mucho el ser madre y aprender cómo consentir a mi muchachito me fascina. A veces mientras cocino pienso en cuando era mi mamá quien lo hacía y eso me hace sonreír como una colegiala. Tengo incluso ganas de compartir estas recetas de vez en cuando y como Jackie me está enseñando a hacer fotografía de mesa, pues voy a acompañarlas con fotos. ¡Sip, estoy muy entusiasmada!

Panquecas (rinde para 2 ó 3 personas)

• 5 cucharadas de mantequilla (75 ml)
• 1-1/4 tazas de harina de trigo (yo uso de la integral)
• 1 cucharada de azúcar
• 1 cucharadita de sal
• 1/2 cucharadita de bicarbonato de sodio
• 1/2 cucharadita de polvo de hornear
• 1 huevo, separado
• 1 taza de suero de leche (o 2/3 de taza de yogur diluido en 1/3 de taza de leche)
• 1/4 taza de leche
• aceite neutro (para freír, como canola o girasol)

Derrite la mantequilla y resérvala para que le baje un poco la temperatura. En un envase mediano mezcla el harina, el azúcar, el polvo de hornear y la sal. En otro envase mezcla bien la yema del huevo, el suero y la leche. Añádeles la mantequilla derretida. Ahora combina ambas mezclas ligeramente. Agrégale la clara del huevo y mezcla sólo hasta formar una pasta; es muy importante no mezclar en exceso; una mezcla levemente grumosa es garantía de panquecas esponjosas.
Pon a calentar una sartén anti-adherente con una capita de aceite. Cuando esté bien caliente, empieza a agregar la mezcla en cucharadas; a mí me funciona muy bien usar una medida de 1/4 de taza, me salen 9 panquecas gorditas. La mezcla se expande sobre la sartén por el calor y cuando empiecen a formarse burbujas en la superficie, fíjate si está dorada por debajo. Si es así, dale vuelta con una espátula para que se cocine por completo (este lado suele tomar la mitad del tiempo).

EN ~ When Samuel was about to turn two years old, we gave him a few books as he used to love “reading” them before bed time. One of those books has five puzzles and since he discovered the fun of solving them, the stories were left behind. Quickly he got very good at solving these simple puzzles, so I brought him a new one made of wood and full of vehicles. The first time we played with it, José and I thought it was too complicated, even for us! Although, less than a week after that, our little boy mastered it.

ES ~ Cuando Samuel estaba a punto de cumplir dos años, le regalamos algunos cuentos ilustrados porque le encantaba “leerlos” antes de dormir. Uno de ellos contiene cinco rompecabezas y desde que él descubrió lo divertido que es resolverlos, los libros pasaron al olvido. Se volvió rápidamente hábil armando estos rompecabezas tan sencillos, así que le traje uno nuevo, con piezas de madera cortadas a mano y repleto de vehículos. La primera vez que jugó con él, José y yo pensamos que era muy complicado. ¡Incluso para nosotros! Pero en menos de una semana, lo tenía dominado.

EN ~ And so I went to look for a new one and this time I found a puzzle made of letters. Our tiny puzzle-solver loved it right away and since then he’s being learning the letters and recognizing them everywhere. It is so cute to see him screaming in the bathtub in Spanish something like: —Mommy, the H! (for the hot water) or saying: —P is for papa!

ES ~ De modo que me fui en busca de uno diferente, y esta vez encontré uno de letras. A nuestro cachorrito le encantó desde el principio y desde entonces ha estado aprendiéndolas y reconociéndolas en todas partes. Es tan lindo verlo gritando en la bañera: —¡Mami, la H! o ¡P de papá!

EN ~ It doesn’t matter if the drawings don’t match the words we use for each letter. We just want for him to embrace Spanish in any possible way before French becomes his main language. Both are beautiful, there’s no doubt about that, but the first one will always be my main choice to communicate to him as well as my mother does to me.

ES ~ No importa que los dibujitos no siempre correspondan con las palabras que usamos para acompañar cada letra. Simplemente lo que queremos es que adopte el español lo más posible antes de que el francés se convierta en su lengua principal. Ambos idiomas son hermosos, pero sin duda para mí, el español será mi vía de conexión con él, así como lo es con mi mamá.

EN ~ Somebody told me once that most of the people living in Montreal are tenants. Actually, by this time of the year lots of Montrealers are looking for a new place to live. We’ll be moving soon and that means a good change, but it also means that I will miss this neighborhood, these streets and the marvelous parks nearby.

ES ~ Alquien me dijo alguna vez que la mayor parte de la gente que vive en Montreal son inquilinos. De hecho, en esta época del año, muchos montrealenses están buscando un nuevo hogar. Nosotros nos mudaremos pronto y eso significa un buen cambio, pero también significa que voy a extrañar este vecindario, estas calles y los maravillosos parques que tenemos cerca.

EN ~ Adriana and I had to come all the way from Maracaibo to Montreal to meet each other and be friends. It could have happened back when we were studying at the same faculty; it could have happened through one of the friends we have in common… but it didn’t happened until we became immigrants. Almost five years have passed by since then and I couldn’t be more grateful for that. She is the kind of friend who brings you chicken soup if you are sick; the kind of woman who knows how to change a flat tire; the kind of girl who cries with you when you are touched or sad… the kind of person you couldn’t live without. {Happy 5 ^th anniversary in Canada mamirruqui!}

ES ~ Adriana y yo tuvimos que venirnos desde Maracaibo hasta Montreal para conocernos y ser amigas. Pudo haber pasado mientras estudiábamos en la misma facultad o a través de nuestros amigos en común; pero no sucedió hasta que nos convertimos en inmigrantes. Casi cinco años han pasado desde entonces y yo no podría estar más agradecida por ello. Ella es el tipo de amiga que atraviesa la ciudad para traerte sopita de pollo si estás enferma; el tipo de mujer que sabe como cambiar una llanta; el tipo de chica que se conmueve hasta las lágrimas contigo… el tipo de persona sin la que no se puede vivir. {¡Feliz 5to. aniversario en Canada mamirruqui!}

EN ~ Two days ago it was so warm and beautiful that we headed to the park right before dinner time. Samuel had such a great time playing and chasing squirrels! It was just another tiny foretaste of summer… Oh, I can’t wait!

ES ~ Hace un par de días hizo un calorcito tan rico que nos fuimos al parque un poco antes de cenar. Samuel la pasó de maravilla jugando y persiguiendo ardillas. No fue más que otra probadita de verano… ¡Ah… no puedo esperar a que llegue!

EN ~ Sometimes I miss that first year, when I was on maternity leave and I was the person who knew Samuel better than anyone else. The fact of being there for most of his first experiences in life is such a wonderful feeling. But I understand that we are not longer one single entity and we both need to live our lives as individuals. Still, I can’t help myself… I wish I could be the ultimate guardian angel for him.

ES ~ Aveces extraño ese primer año, cuando estaba de permiso de maternidad y era la persona más cercana a Samuel, quien lo conocía mejor que nadie. El hecho de estar a su lado en la mayor parte de sus primeras experiencias es maravilloso. Pero entiendo que ya no somos una unidad y ambos necesitamos vivir nuestras vidas como individuos. Pese a ello, me encantaría ser su ángel guardián.

EN ~ There are two things I miss a lot from our old apartment: the balcony and the skylight in the bathroom. Both things have much to do with the light, natural light to be more specific; there’s nothing like it. I wish I had that skylight back so I could portrait Samuel surrounded by bubbles, he looks so happy and playful! But I just can’t capture all the little details with that awful tungsten and he moving so quickly doesn’t help either. Heck, I think I’m done with living in a basement!

EN ~ Hay dos cosas que extraño mucho del apartamento donde vivíamos antes: el balcón y la claraboya del baño. Ambas cosas tienen mucho que ver con la luz, luz natural para ser precisa; no hay nada parecido. Me encantaría tener esa claraboya de nuevo para retratar a Samuel rodeado de burbujas. !Se le ve tan feliz! Pero la luz horrible de los bombillos y él moviéndose tan rápido no ayudan. ¡Ahhhh… estoy hastiada de vivir en un sótano!

EN ~ Despite of the bad lighting, our current bathroom has something. See these pics I took last summer? I called them “Don’t you knock?!” They always make me smile.

ES ~ A pesar de la mala iluminación, nuestro baño actual tiene su encanto. ¿Viste esta serie que hice el verano pasado? La llamé “Don’t you knock?!” algo así como ¡Te cuesta mucho tocar la puerta? Siempre me hace sonreír.

EN ~ There’s almost 1 700 employes in the company I work for. Just in the building I go everyday we are around 118 and guess who are the nicest ones? These four handsome guys who agreed to have lunch with me today!

ES ~ Hay casi 1700 empleados en la compañía para la que trabajo. Nada más en el edificio al que voy a diario somos unos 118. ¿Adivinas quiénes son los más amables? ¡Pues estos chicos guapos que fueron a almorzar conmigo hoy!

EN ~ Truth be told, you get used to live surrounded by people that doesn’t speak your mother language; I even find myself having problems to recall a word in Spanish… but, when you finally find someone who shares your background in this sense, it feels like vacations. It is easier to connect and it may not be just a matter of language; it is also about culture, sense of humor, facial expressions, music and many other things. There may be many differences, but you understand what they mean when they talk to you in many levels.

ES ~ Uno se acostumbra a vivir rodeado de gente que no comparte tu lengua materna; yo misma me sorprendo a veces tratando de recordar alguna palabra en español… pero, cuando finalmente encuentras a alguien que se comunica de la misma manera que tú, se siente como estar de vacaciones. Es más fácil conectarse y no se trata simplemente de una cuestión de lenguaje; se trata de cultura, sentido del humor, expresiones faciales, música y tantas otras cosas. Puede que haya muchas diferencias, pero entiendes lo que quieren decirte de muchas formas.

EN ~ So today, at a Tex-Mex restaurant, we only spoke Cuban, Mexican, Colombian, Peruvian and Venezuelan and we sure told so to the waiter!

EN ~ Así que hoy, en un restaurante Tex-Mex, sólo hablamos cubano, mejicano, colombiano, peruano y venezolano… ¡Y nos aseguramos de que el mesonero se enterase!

EN ~ One is none, says my mother. Although she had 8 children; no wonder she thinks having only one kid is like having nothing. I don’t feel that way at all. On the contrary, sometimes I feel overwhelmed by my little boy; he’s so full of energy!

ES ~ Uno es ninguno, dice mi mamá. Claro que ella tuvo ocho hijos, por eso no sorprende que para ella tener sólo un hijo es como no tener del todo. Yo no pienso de la misma manera, por el contrario, a veces me siento agobiada ante la energía inacabable de mi cachorrito.
